What you need to know before installing solar panels
Part P of the Building Regulations covers electrical safety in dwellings. Solar panel installation involves significant electrical work — connecting panels to inverters, wiring into your consumer unit, and configuring export metering. This falls squarely under Part P, meaning the work must be carried out by a registered competent person or inspected by Building Control.
Only electricians registered with a competent person scheme (such as NICEIC or NAPIT) can self-certify solar installations under Part P. Unregistered installers must involve Building Control at additional cost and delay. Using a registered electrician means your installation is certified on completion, with no waiting for inspections.
The Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) is the quality standard for renewable energy installations. MCS certification confirms your system was designed, installed, and commissioned correctly. Without MCS certification, you cannot register for the Smart Export Guarantee — meaning you won't get paid for the electricity you export to the grid.
Your solar panel manufacturer warranty typically requires MCS-certified installation. Without it, a warranty claim could be rejected. The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) — which pays you for surplus electricity exported to the grid — requires both MCS certification and DNO (Distribution Network Operator) approval. We handle both as part of every installation.
